We are frequently asked what our predictions are for 2022. Naturally, we tend to answer quickly that it will be the year for institutional adoption of digital assets. However, that already happened this year in many ways, for example:

• El Salvador accepted a cryptocurrency as a legal tender;
• The European Investment Bank issued a tokenized bond on a public blockchain;
• Large custodians (e.g. State Street) and banks (e.g. Citi) launched digital assets divisions and are now hiring hundreds of people;
• Institutions tried to leverage DeFi lending protocols to beat low interest rates and inflation;
• More than $30B of securities have been compliantly tokenized.

Do we think that 2022 will be the year of DeFi, Metaverse, NFTs, cross-chain protocols, stablecoins or decentralized identity? Our answer is that it will be the year for all of these “keywords” and trends, because we are now dealing with a complete blockchain ecosystem, with the Web 3.0 revolution.

With financial institutions, governments, and millions of daily users now recognizing the industry, the upcoming year will bring even more innovation and, for sure, the acceleration of the mass adoption of crypto-assets will continue.

I hope that market standards for tokenized assets and self-sovereign identities will soon be recognized by large players so that we can address one of the major challenges of the next decade: guaranteeing ownership of digital assets.
